Molepolole and Surrounds
Molepolole is the town of the Bakwena tribe - one of the principle tribes of Botswana. It displays an interesting mix of architecture, which reflects the changing nature of the Motswana society, as tradition gives way to a more modern lifestyle.

Most of these changes are recorded (and compared) in the Sechele Museum in Molepolole.

Kweneng is one of Botswana's nine administrative districts. It's the historical homeland of the Bakwena people, who were the first tribe converted to Christianity by David Livingstone - a history to which the landmark of Livingstone's Cave alludes.

Molepolole is the district's capital, and Botswana's most populous village with 65,570 inhabitants.

Starting at at 830am, heading west from Gaborone, we depart for Molepolole which is 50kms away. Upon arrival in the town we will visit the following attractions:

  • The Scottish Livingstone Hospital started in 1931 as a maternity clinic.
In 1934 Dr Shepard joined Miss Taylor and founded the hospital with funds donated by the United Free Church of Scotland. Today the hospital has 260 beds and covers a catchment area of 145,000 people.
  • The Mission House. This historic house was brought out in pieces from Britian in the early 1900’s. A number of missionaries have lived in this house over the years.
  • LMS Church and Belfry
  • Kgosi Sechele 1 Museum. The museum is open Tuesdays to Saturdays .
The museum is well supported by the local community and displays artifacts, historical photos and paintings.

We will stop off for teas and lunch (supplied by Garcin Safaris).
